What the three positions mean

The first card is what you are carrying: the history, the habit, the thing that set this up. The second is where you stand now, which is usually the part people can already feel but have not put words to. The third is where it goes if nothing changes — not a prophecy, a trajectory. Read alone they are three card meanings. Read together they are an argument about your situation, and the argument is the reading.

How to ask

Open questions work; yes-or-no questions waste the format. "Should I stay or go" gives three cards something to do. "Will I be happy" does not, because it asks the cards to be certain about something nobody is certain about. The more specific the situation you name, the more specific the reading can be about it.

When three cards are not enough

Three cards answer a question. They do not usually answer a tangled one — where several things are pulling at once, where you already suspect the real question is underneath the one you asked. That is what a ten-card spread is for: it has room for what is blocking you and what you are not looking at, which three cards simply have nowhere to put.
